As much of a rule as words of advice, here is my ten minute rule for watching gulls: just observe any kind of gull for 10 minutes straight and in that time they will do something silly, stupid, interesting that makes for good photo opps. Although watching individual birds for that length of time can be challenging at first but always pays off; for example in this instance I watched an individual juvenile Laughing Gull for 10 minutes on a post before about five minutes later another juvenile arrived to take its spot: created this photo and that confrontation resulted in my taking this photo: Simple rule that describes it all – the Gull Ten Minute Rule
