Bolivar Flats truly does not disappoint! This was our second visit to this legendary birding area, and although somewhat reduced from its former grandeur, we photographed fourteen species within two hours – 8199 captures before high tide began chasing us off the tide line. Two bird species that particularly delighted me were the Whimbrel and Long-billed Curlew; both Arctic nestors making the Texas Coast their first landfall after crossing the Gulf – in particular The Long-billed Curlew was an unforgettable bird that really started it all for me personally!
At just the start of third grade, I developed an interest in birds that has stuck. Each morning on my ride to school, I traversed across baseball/football fields covered with hundreds of shorebirds in fall; seeing them part in harmony really captured my imagination; particularly that long “nose.” Mrs Rayban was an avid birder herself who encouraged my interest while seeing how easily distracted I could become from class seat seating in back corner seat – an amazing coincidence as lying on sand yesterday brought back those memories. Elementary school has long since faded but these memories came flooding back… elementary school was long ago!
