Storytelling should always be at the top of our camera bag – our kit. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone’s face light up when they see one of your images; though sometimes that may be easier said than done! Here, a Coyote was focused on mousing away and seemingly not paying much heed to us; yet he still kinda was. Shooting without a tripod made it easier than ever to walk when the Coyote walked and stop when it stopped so within moments it had totally ignored us and put us in an ideal spot with clean backgrounds. Once again, photography was key. Since it was an overcast day with gray skies, I overexposed by +1/3 to brighten up the scene – an important factor when thinking of stories with humor or light! Coyotes talk with their tail, just like our Maggie does, and I was focused on that aspect when shooting Maggie’s story. By keeping an eye on its movements I had an idea when it would pounce; using that insight I centered her within the frame to emphasize its direction which leads down towards her ears. Sure it may take more thought when shooting than usual but that’s all part of storytelling! All those little pieces together help build humor that sparks our imagination!
