Photography requires us to constantly balance between composition and light, which was evident with the setting sun illuminated wispy clouds. I asked the owner of Travel Air 12-W if I could turn it so as to get more light on its side fuselage as well as incorporate clouds. Once I had taken these steps, the clouds had moved into view from behind me and now were directly overhead rather than being further in the background. To bring them closer into focus I needed to go wide-low-close; although that has no particular downside other than making the wings in the foreground appear larger! As I made the shot, these thoughts ran through my mind: distortion in the wheels but capture of sunset. My photo depicting a Travel Air 12-W is only partially true to its iconic lines, yet its popularity and associated paydays put much of that out of mind until I look through my viewfinder again and see it all come back together; reminding me what the big skies offer us all.
