The Glow of the Backlit Airshow

Posted on July 21, 2024September 15, 2024 By focusphotofocus.com No Comments on The Glow of the Backlit Airshow

Last night was an absolute blast with the Huntington Camera Club (thank you all!) I met some wonderful folks and we discussed one of my favorite topics – aviation photography! With the Jones Beach Airshow coming soon and their Q&A session coming soon after that, there was one fantastic question asked during Q&A time that really made my evening! How Can You Photograph Airshows Under Backlight Conditions? While backlit subjects can sometimes make for some striking photographs, hours upon hours of them could get tiresome quickly. As I move away from show center and toward the end of the performance box (where there is the best background), I photograph aircraft making their turn back towards show center with sun shining directly on them – such as this Corsair above. By moving closer to these sunlit aircraft you can avoid shadowy images. This approach provides the quickest solution I know for backlit airshows.
