The Cost of Depth

Posted on May 13, 2024September 15, 2024 By focusphotofocus.com No Comments on The Cost of Depth

Today was another stunning morning at the Water Ranch. The Ring-necked Ducks were particularly friendly today and would often come closer than I could focus. I was stunned by the Z600f4 TC’s ability to capture minute details. When I saw drops of water and feathers within its narrow band of focus at f/4, the thought crossed my mind: What would happen if f/11 came into play? As soon as I dialed in f/11, my shutter speed instantly skyrocketed – 1/40! To capture detail requires both depth of focus and shutter speed to capture movement; ducks frequently bob their heads back and forth across my frame. 1/40 simply isn’t enough to stop that motion, so I needed to observe peak of action carefully and shoot numerous frames since this shot has such a low precentage rate. Finally, only 1 frame needed to be successful, the one you see above! In total it cost shutter speed, frames and time – that is the cost of depth!
